Q&A with Dr. Nelson
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
My favorite animated movie is Disney's The Princess and the Frog.
What is your favorite children's book?
My favorite children's book is Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss because I read it to my firstborn so often that we memorized it together. It is one of my favorite memories of reading with my children.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
My favorite childhood "toy" was the outdoors. Growing up in Jamaica, I loved being in nature and exploring the world around me.
Who is your greatest inspiration?
My mother is my greatest inspiration. She overcame so many challenges to become a nurse at 45 years old and to have a prosperous career, taking care of the elderly.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
My hobbies and interests include gardening, walking, and reading for leisure. I love getting wrapped up in a good book. Watch out, Netflix—books are making a comeback!
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
Ive always loved children. I initially wanted to become a veterinarian, but I found out pretty quickly that animals and I do not get along . With kids , I love the investigation when they cannot tell you what's wrong. I love watching them become their own person . Love the journey together.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
I pride myself on being down to earth. I am a good listener, and I love the art of the differential diagnosis. When a parent has a concern, I am all ears. Let's figure this out together.
Teenagers are a special bunch . Getting through to a teenager and making that connection is ultimately satisfying .
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
The doctors office can be very stressful for children . From shyness to anxiety to Autism Spectrum , its important to be able to read the room and tailor your approach to each child. My 22 years of experience has taught me a lot about first impressions.
