Q&A with Dr. Hirschmann
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
Today I love the cartoons my children watched as little kids--Bluey, Daniel Tiger, Spidey & friends, Stinky & Dirty. When I was a little kid I loved watching these Nickelodeon deep cuts-Little Koalas, David the Gnome, Reading Rainbow and Wishbone.
What is your favorite children's book?
I have many favorite children's books and authors, but my all time favorite is Spring is Here, by Taro Gomi. The simple sentences and illustrations are attractive to young babies and toddlers, and it is perfect for Kindergarteners learning to read. Beyond that, however, it is a beautiful reflection and appreciation for change of the seasons and the passage of time.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
I have always loved stuffed animals. As a child, a stuffy was the one thing I would choose at a gift shop or top my holiday wish list. I had quite a collection!
Who is your greatest inspiration?
My two boys are my greatest inspiration and teachers. They inspire me to be the best version of myself, to show guidance and model perseverance and resilience. I love seeing the world fresh through their eyes. They are a daily reminder that we must leave the world a better place for them and their generation.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
In my time away from work, I enjoy spending time with my family and hiking with our dog in the beautiful Hudson Valley.
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
My background in child development goes back decades, from teaching and coaching swimming as teen, to assisting in preschool education as a young adult, and then pursuing my career as a doctor.
One of the things that inspires me most about pediatrics is that kids have a really great built in resilience. Part of my job as a pediatrician is to support kids' natural tendency toward good health, by making sure they are growing well, encouraging health habits, and providing them with the resources, like vaccinations or medications, when they need them. Setting the foundation for lifelong good health is my goal for my patients.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
My commitment is to my pediatric patient. I treat each child with respect and individuality whether they are a newborn or a teenager. I welcome concerns and discussion; I want my patients and their families to feel heard and cared for.
