I got the COVID Vaccine because …

covid-19

I received the Moderna vaccine on Jan 6th. I had some soreness at the site that evening, and was absolutely fine the next day.

A few months ago, I was skeptical and concerned about a vaccine coming out so quickly. I asked my oldest child, a biomedical engineer, what he thought. He’s all about the science and he answered all my questions.

1) The reason vaccines take so long to be approved is due to the FDA, funding, and bureaucratic hoops built into the system. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines did ALL the appropriate trials, for the necessary amount of time, with enough folks to obtain the required safety and efficacy (effectiveness) information. In the vaccine world, ‘long term’ side effects are limited to 2 months post vaccine.

2) The “new” technology used in the COVID vaccine is not experimental. It has been in development for years. This is just the first time it’s been on the market, for all the above reasons.

3) My brilliant child is super excited about the way the vaccine works. He hates needles, has never gotten a flu shot, and says he will get the COVID vaccine as soon as it’s available to him. He’s envious of those who have already received it. He had COVID in April and was sick as a dog for 10 days.

All the “info” out there about 5G tracking, infertility, and changing our DNA, is made-up nonsense, without ANY basis in fact or science.

But I do understand the fear and reluctance. I understand the total lack of trust. Especially for those of us who are Black and Brown. This country has a long ugly history of medical racism – Google Tuskegee syphilis trials, sterilization without consent, and Henrietta Lacks. Many of us have been taught “you go to the hospital to die”. We don’t trust medicine, we don’t take medicine, we’ve had the experience of our health concerns being dismissed and our illnesses ignored. That’s all very real.

However, at the end of the day, I got the vaccine for ONE reason. I don’t want to get COVID. I see children with COVID every day. I’ve heard too many first-hand stories about how bad it can be. Everyone is at risk of a poor outcome and I don’t want to be one of those who develops complications and ends up in the hospital. Because if that happens, I will be ALONE. I don’t want to grieve my life and not be able to say good-bye to my children and hold their hands. I don’t want to put my kids or my loved ones through that horror. I don’t want them to worry, be afraid, or be heartbroken and helpless. Because THAT is the fact of COVID.

There’s no way vaccine side effects can be worse than the reality of COVID-19.

School Essentials for Essential Kids – Donate Now

The Children’s Medical Group has been caring for the children of the Mid Hudson Valley for generations. When COVID struck and the schools went virtual, many of our children were lacking the basic supplies to learn from home. Teachers were frustrated that even when they could connect with students, the kids did not have the simple essentials such as pencils, crayons, or scissors that could help the teachers guide their students at home. These items are especially needed to teach the youngest elementary students how to read and write, add and subtract.

This problem was felt most strongly in families with limited resources or whose parents were essential workers, many from the City of Poughkeepsie and other communities in our area.

The Children’s Medical Group team would like your help in our effort to help our kids and their teachers and families. We are raising funds to buy these supplies and assemble packages to give out to the youngest students if classrooms are forced go online again this year. $10 will buy all of the supplies needed for each child. We will purchase, assemble and distribute these items to our youngest and neediest students as soon as the need arises.

This is an ambitious project. We hope to help thousands of kids. Every dollar sent will go straight to the purchase of supplies. All work will be done by volunteers from our staff and community.

At CMG, we say, “We take care of kids.” Our commitment to our children goes far beyond taking care of their medical needs, especially this year. We love our kids. Please help us help them.

New Requirements for Student Health Examinations

Pediatricians of the Hudson Valley - The Children's Medical Group

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As of July 1, 2018, New York State law requires a health examination for all students entering the school district for the first time and when entering Pre-K or K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th , and 11th grade.

The examination must be completed by a New York State licensed physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner.

A new approved NYSED Student Health Examination Form for Schools will also be available beginning on 7/1/2018.

Many medical provider offices may not yet be aware of the change. To assist with the transition, schools may accept any health examination form provided during the 2018-2019 school year.

If you have already had a physical examination completed for the 2018-19 school year on our traditional CMG School/Camp/Daycare form, the school may accept the physical on that form.

The new approved NYSED Student Health Examination Form will be the only form accepted starting in the 2019-2020 school year.

The Children’s Medical Group will be collaborating with our EHR vendor and all local school districts to help in the transition into the new mandated NYSED Student Health Examination form for the 2019-2020 school year.

The Children’s Medical Group Raises Funds for United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region for 16th Year

October 18, 2017 – The Children’s Medical Group kicked off its 16th Annual Campaign to benefit “United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region” with close to 100 attendees. CMG employees heard presentations on how their donations help make a difference in the local community from Rachel Johnson, Vice President of Development at United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region, Sharon Williams, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange and Marlene Taylor, Instructor of Your Defiant Child with Mental Health America of Dutchess County.

Joe Heavey, CEO of The Children’s Medical Group, has been involved with United Way for over 20 years and served as an inspiration to CMG employees. As part of the fundraiser, Annette Ferrari of CMG was able to secure some fun prizes like high-end handbags.

Presenters at this year’s event shared stories of how gifts from CMG have helped children heal from domestic violence, fund developmental screenings (CMG was one of the first United Way check-up sites) and provide mentoring and tutoring for at-risk students. One of the most moving stories of the night came from Big Brothers Big Sisters, who told the story of Ana, who was provided with a special mentor thanks to United Way supporters like CMG. Ana’s rough childhood and the loss of many family members lead her to Big Brothers Big Sisters, which is funded by United Way. After months of persistence by her mentor, Ana gradually began opening up and is now looking at colleges with her mentor. CMG gifts are used to fund this program and help at-risk children succeed in school and life.

The campaign raised close to $11,000 this year. United Way’s Children’s Corner is one of the programs CMG helped to support (pictured below):

The Children’s Medical Group Celebrates 20 Years!

The Children’s Medical Group, the premier Pediatricians of the Hudson ValleySM, is celebrating 20 years of “Taking Care of Your Kids.”

In 1932, Pediatric and Adolescent Associates was founded, and the Hudson Valley Pediatric Group was founded in 1952; both in Poughkeepsie, NY. Having had a long and distinguished history of caring for the region’s children, these two groups joined forces on March 1st, 1997 to form The Children’s Medical Group (CMG).

From those two offices, The Children’s Medical Group has grown to nine offices caring for children in Dutchess, Orange and Ulster counties, providing access to the local population with a maximum 7-10-mile drive. In addition, CMG takes care of kids from Columbia, Greene, and Putnam counties, including the western edge of Connecticut. The Children’s Medical Group healthcare team is dedicated to medical excellence, with evening and weekend hours in several offices.

CMG is able to offer well-care visits, same-day sick visits, evening, weekend and holiday availability, as well as complete in-office lab services. The professional team of Board Certified Pediatricians and highly experienced Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioners provide superior care and a higher standard of excellence. In 2016, 18 physicians and nurse practitioners at CMG were recognized by “Hudson Valley Parent” magazine as Favorite Docs & Healthcare Professionals, and Doctors David Fenner, Marc Habert, Sejal Dalwadi and John Sieverding have also been selected as “Castle Connolly Top Doctors.”
